The scholarships program is one of the mechanisms for cooperation within the Organization of American States. Its fundamental objective is to promote the economic, social, scientific and cultural development of the member states in order to strengthen ties and achieve a stronger bond and better understanding among the peoples of the Americas through the advanced training of its citizens in priority areas.

Each year, the Organization of American States will award at least one scholarship to Canadians for study or research.

There are two types of scholarships available:

  • Scholarships in an OAS Consortium University: candidates apply directly to up to three programs in universities or educational institutions from the OAS Consortium of Universities list , located in up to three different countries. Candidates must consider at least two different countries of study in their OAS application to be eligible. Applying to this type of scholarship increases the candidate’s chances of being offered an OAS scholarship. Note that under this option, the OAS will reserve the right to select a country of study or research for selected candidates
  • Scholarships in a Non-OAS Consortium University: candidates apply directly for admission to the universities or educational institutions of their choice and apply separately for an OAS scholarship.

The academic placement or research must be carried out on a full-time basis and may be pursued on-site, by online education or a combination of both.

Scholarships are not offered for studies in Medical Sciences  or the learning of new languages.

To be eligible, candidates must:
